The Major Crime Investigations Team has provided the following information:

Please note that we do not have a recorded Force definition of the term ‘cold case’ and the following data is based on the definition provided in the request text.

Please may you provide me with:

  • The total number of previously cold cases your police force has reopened and is currently working on.

Information not held as cold cases are never closed and so cannot be reopened.

  • The total number of cold cases relating to homicide.

There is a total of 8 undetected or acquitted homicide cases.

  • The total number of cold cases relating to unidentified remains.

•           The names of victims relating to homicide cold cases and the year of the crime. I am requesting the names of all unsolved/cold murder cases along with the year.

  • Emily Tharme – 1960
  • Unidentified baby – 1981
  • Sandra Court – 1986
  • John Green – 1991
  • Beatrice Wilson – 2000
  • Stanley Blackmore - 1983
  • Rose Lifely - 1971
  • Samuel Williamson - 1988

 

  • The names of victims relating to unidentified remains cold cases and the year of the potential crime. Please just provide the year.

For the context of this FOI, can cold cases refer to any unsolved crime that is not the subject of a current criminal investigation? If your police force has another definition for this term that it uses, or has a similar category/term with a different definition, could that be used instead? If this is the case, can you please explain your definition and how you use the term?
