The Road Safety Team has provided the following information:
Please note that the figures supplied represent the number of vehicles detected contravening a 60mph speed limit.
The figures provided include both:
The detection of a contravention of a 60mph speed limit on roads subject of a 60mph speed restriction.
The detection of a contravention of a 60mph speed limit on roads subject of a 70mph speed restriction by vehicles subject of a 60mph restriction by virtue of the classification of the vehicle.
The FOI covers the period 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025.
For each of the following calendar years: 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025, please can you provide the following:
1) The total number of motorists detected travelling above the 60mph speed limit on roads with a 60mph speed limit
2021–1660
2022–943
2023–810
2024–514
2025–1334
2) A breakdown of the number of motorists detected in the following speed bands:
- 61-70mph: 2021–563, 2022–313, 2023–385, 2024–228, 2025–581
- 71-80mph: 2021–908, 2022–495, 2023–341, 2024–219, 2025–621
- 81-90mph: 2021–167, 2022–112, 2023–78, 2024–59, 2025–115
- 91-100mph: 2021–20, 2022–21, 2023–5, 2024–8, 2025–14
- Over 100mph: 2021–2, 2022–2, 2023–1, 2024–0, 2025–3
3) The single highest speed recorded on a road with a 60mph speed limit during the entire period covered by this request (2012-2015), together with the road name/location and date of the offence, if held.
As the previous questions were asking for the years 2021 to 2025, we assume the above is a typo and have provided details for 2021–2025. We do not hold figures for 2012–2015.
The single highest speed was 112mph which was recorded on 18/07/2025 on A37 Bubbdown Hill.
