We are excited to be open for our next round of promotion boards – Sergeant

Our overall aim is to provide a first-class service by protecting the public, reducing crime, and ensuring our communities feel safe. To support us in delivering these aims we are seeking applications from experienced Constables seeking promotion to Sergeant, and substantive Sergeants wishing to work within Durham Constabulary.

Are you the right person to transfer on Promotion?

Before Durham Constabulary progresses your application, consideration will be given to several initial eligibility criteria. Therefore, please consider the following before completing an application. To be considered eligible to be promoted to Sergeant in Durham Constabulary you will:

• Currently be serving at the rank of Police Constable in a Home Office police force, from the Police Service of Northern Ireland & Police Scotland.
• Completed your probation in your current rank.

• Must have passed the Sergeants OSPRE/NPPF exam. NPPF must be within 5 years.
• Demonstrated competence in that rank through your performance, attendance and disciplinary record.
• Candidates who have a current unsatisfactory performance review and/or a performance action plan in place may be rejected during the initial eligibility screening process. We will examine the performance reviews that are submitted alongside your application to ensure they meet our standards.
• Durham Constabulary operates a strict Attendance Management Policy. Individuals who have averaged the following triggers over the last 12 months will ordinarily be rejected from the process. The attendance indicator is no more than 64 hours for Police Officers (pro rata) or no more than 3 periods of absence in the past 12 months; or a pattern of absence suggesting that regular attendance cannot be relied upon.
• No live written improvement notices issued under the Police (Performance) Regulations 2012 or reduction in rank under those procedures in the previous 18 months.
• No live written, final written warning or extended final written warning issued under Police (Conduct) Regulations 2020. (NB a finding of misconduct where no separate penalty is applied (reg 35(i)(b) does not debar an officer from proceeding to Step 2.
• Demonstrate a passion and commitment to policing Durham and Darlington.

Consideration will be given to absences resulting from injuries on duty, pregnancy, or conditions covered by the Equality Act 2010. This will be reviewed after successful completion of the required assessment.

Recruitment Timetable:

• Competitive shortlisting process by Tuesday 17^th February 2026, your application will be scored, and weaker applications will not be progressed to interview.
  
  
• Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an Interview hints & Tips session Monday 23^rd February 2026 via teams (12-1pm), this session is recorded for anyone unable to attend.
  
  
• Interviews at Durham HQ taking place between Monday 9^th March – Friday 20^th March 2026 (depending on candidate numbers)
